Geology

Geological setting:
Local outcrops are dominated by Beacon Sandstone and Ferrar Dolerite; glacial sequences are similar to other alpine of the Asgard Range with old sequences of local alpine valley glaciers dominated by sandstone and dolerite; the valley mouth till (Asgard Till) includes granitic rocks and other unidentified crystalline rocks indicating a non local source
Patterned ground:
Broad inactive patterned ground nets
Surface weathering or surface features:
A dominantly cobble and small boulder surface with very few larger upstanding boulders; slight to moderate pitting and some polish on fine grained clasts; some disaggregation of coarse grained clasts; moderately developed ventiforms; salts beneath some surface clasts

Soil

Soil parent material:
Sandstone and dolerite till with minor granitic and other crystalline components
Previous disturbance:
Nil
Soil weathering stage:
4 (Campbell & Claridge 1975)
Soil moisture status:
Patchy snow cover from recent falls; some thaw with patchy soil moistening
Biological activity:
Nil observed

HorizonDepthDescription
399a -2 – 0 cm surface pebbly and cobbly granular sand predominantly sandstone; subrounded and strongly stained; some salts beneath larger clasts,
399b 0 – 2 cm brown (7.5YR 5/4) sandy gravel; loose to weakly cohesive; weakly developed vesicular structure; few fine salt flecks; rock particles subrounded; strongly stained and distinctly altered; distinct boundary,
399c 2 – 20 cm strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) sandy gravel; soil colour is patchy and strongest adjacent to dolerite clasts; some distinct diffuse salt segregations; moderately cohesive; rock particles subrounded, distinctly stained and some strongly altered; distinct boundary,
399d 20 – 55 cm yellow (2.5Y 7/4) gravelly sand; loose; rock particles mainly subangular and unstained; sharp boundary, on ice-cemented ground
