Geology

Geological setting:
Local rocks are Beacon Sandstone and Ferrar Dolerite; the till in the valley floor contains granite with some large erratics near the valley mouth from outside the region; the erratics indicate former incursions of ice into the valley mouth; moraine loops show the extent of various ice advances
Patterned ground:
Nil
Surface weathering or surface features:
Some granite boulders strongly oxidised and crumbled, others with a fresher appearance; well developed cavernous weathering; dolerite strongly stained and pitted; well developed pavement with polish and ventiforms; abundant salts beneath surface stones

Soil

Soil parent material:
Dolerite and sandstone till with some granite forming paleosols
Previous disturbance:
Nil
Soil weathering stage:
6 4 (Campbell & Claridge 1975)
Soil moisture status:
Xerous to subxerous; occasional light summer snow falls with brief surface soil moistening
Biological activity:
Nil at site
