Geology
Geological setting:
The Walcott Bay area has a complex geology with basement rocks, small volcanic cones and an extensive drift mantle which include a wide range of rocks; the lower altitude surfaces represent the most recently exposed surfaces following retreat of ice from Walcott Bay and the nearby alpine glaciers; a stream section above the lower ice-cored surfaces has stratified sediments which are clearly older and may be ashy or chemical deposits, as suggested by their low density
Patterned ground:
Nil
Surface weathering or surface features:
The section is steep and the dry gully has probably been eroded by periodic high water flows
Soil
Soil parent material:
Stratified sands and brown sediment, possibly altered ash deposits and ice-marginal
Previous disturbance:
Nil
Soil weathering stage:
Soil moisture status:
Oceanic subxerous; the site is currently dry but probably receives occasional water flows from snow thaw
Biological activity:
Moss patches in damp nearby hollows

Description
557a
0 – 80 cm
pale brown (10YR 6/3) stony coarse sand; firm; breaking to moderately cohesive; many fine distinct yellowish brown finely crystalline 'mottled' patches or inclusions, distinct boundary,
557b
80 – 125 cm
very pale brown (10YR 7/3) granular sand; very firm; weakly stratified breaking to coarse block like structure; some yellowish brown lapilli like soft inclusions with a weak crystalline structure; sharp boundary;
557c
125 – 155 cm
light yellowish brown (10YR 6/4) sandy gravel; moderately firm; weakly laminated; rock particles mainly subangular and unweathered; distinct boundary,
557d
155 – 205 cm
very pale brown to yellow (10YR 7/4 - 8/6) sandy silt; firmly cohesive breaking to loose amorphous powdery sandy silt; fine material with distinct but weakly developed crystalline structure; sharp boundary, on weakly laminated sandy gravel
