Geology

Geological setting:
Brown Peninsula comprises volcanic rocks, mainly scoria flows of the McMurdo Volcanics Group; the area was over-ridden during the Ross Glaciation by the expanded Ross Ice Sheet; evidence of extensive ice sheet covering is provided by the presence of erratics, sandstone, dolerite and granite from the west
Patterned ground:
Weakly developed broad nets; troughs 10-40cm deep; some multiple parallel troughs in places
Surface weathering or surface features:
Erratics are fresh and unweathered but are weakly ventiformed; salts beneath larger clasts are common; carbonate coatings present on undersides of some clasts

Soil

Soil parent material:
Basaltic sandy gravel, dominantly scoria, with some finer grained basalt and occasional crystalline rocks
Previous disturbance:
Nil
Soil weathering stage:
6 1 (Campbell & Claridge 1975)
Soil moisture status:
Oceanic subxerous; no local snow patches; occasional summer snow falls
Biological activity:
Nil observed

560b 0 – 5 cm light brownish grey (10YR 6/2) sandy to silty gravel; weakly cohesive; weakly developed vesicular structure; rock particles subrounded to rounded and unstained; a few fine salt flecks; some fine distinctly oxidised ghosts; indistinct boundary,
560c 5 – 16 cm greyish brown (10YR 5/2) sandy to silty gravel; loose to weakly cohesive; rock particles subrounded to rounded and unstained; distinct boundary,
560d 16 – 30 cm greyish brown to dark greyish brown (10YR 5/2 - 4/2) sandy to silty gravel; loose; rock particles mainly reddish scoria and subangular; some angular glassy particles; distinct boundary,
560e 30 – 35 cm brown to dark brown (7.5YR 4/2) sandy gravel; moderately cohesive; frosted; rock particles angular to subangular and unstained; sharp boundary, on ice-cemented ground
