Geology

Geological setting:
Moraines on elevated surfaces to the south of Koerwitz Glacier show distinct age differences between the lower and higher altitude surfaces; the younger moraines clearly show signs of a re-advance of ice from the north; granites predominates but some dolerite, schist and dark metavolcanic rocks are present; this surface appears a little older than the site for 280
Patterned ground:
Nil
Surface weathering or surface features:
Some surface deflation; coarse grained granitic rocks well crumbled; dark fine grained rocks with distinct polish; some ventiforms

Soil

Soil parent material:
Granitic bouldery sandy gravel
Previous disturbance:
Nil
Soil weathering stage:
6 3/4 (Campbell & Claridge 1975)
Soil moisture status:
Some water observed in rock hollows; thaw water on some rock surfaces; soils moist in patches adjacent to some boulders; snow drift patches thawing at edges
Biological activity:
Nil observed
Profile Description
HorizonDepthDescription
281a -2 – 0 cm surface pebbles and granular sand; rock particles rounded to subangular; weakly to moderately stained but some disaggregating and distinctly altered,
281b 0 – 5 cm yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) sandy gravel; weakly cohesive; weakly developed vesicular structure; salts adhering to some clasts; rock particles rounded to subangular and weakly stained; sharp boundary,
281c 5 – 10 cm pale brown (10YR 6/3) sandy gravel; moderately cohesive; profuse salts forming a discrete horizon; salts also precipitating on the exposed horizon with surface soil drying; few to many ghosts; rock particles subrounded to subangular; distinct boundary,
281d 20 – 30 cm light yellowish brown (2.5Y 6/4) sandy gravel; loose; rock particles subrounded to subangular and weakly stained; sharp boundary, on hard ice-cemented ground
