Geology

Geological setting:
Ferrar Dolerite forms extensive sills; the surface is an old over-ridden landscape with a mammillated topography;
Patterned ground:
Nil
Surface weathering or surface features:
Dolerite is strongly stained; rock surfaces are exfoliating and rounded; some salts present; fine grained dolerite is strongly pitted; weakly developed pavement

Soil

Soil parent material:
Disaggregated dolerite bedrock
Previous disturbance:
Nil
Soil weathering stage:
6 5 (Campbell & Claridge 1975)
Soil moisture status:
Xerous; scattered small snow patches on adjacent slopes but no indications of soil moistening
Biological activity:
Occasional yellow lichen observed
Profile Description
HorizonDepthDescription
507a -2 – 0 cm surface granular pebbly gravel; rock particles subangular, strongly stained and some partly altered; some thin salt coatings,
507b 0 – 2 cm strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) sandy granular gravel; weakly cohesive; weakly developed vesicular structure; rock particles subangular and moderately altered with some reddish internal staining; distinct boundary,
507c 2 – 7 cm strong brown (7.5YR 5/6) granular gravel from in situ rock disaggregation; weakly cohesive; patchy salt accumulations; some ghosts; rock particles angular to subangular, moderately stained and some partly altered with reddish oxide staining; some patches of reddish sandy gravel; distinct boundary,
507d 7 – 20 cm dark yellowish brown (10YR 3/4) pebbly granular gravel; in situ bedrock fragmentation; rock particles angular and moderately stained; sharp boundary overlying ice-cemented ground,
507e 10 – 15 cm yellowish red to reddish brown (5YR 4/6 - 4/4) sandy granular gravel; reddish irregular patches form between disaggregating bedrock; rock particles subangular to angular, moderately altered with abundant red iron oxide intergranular pseudomorphs
